Hoop Masters Workout Guide
Dear Players,
Welcome back to Hoop Masters! I am excited to see so many of you back in the gym working hard. Most of you are doing a great job of hustling and listening in the practices that we have had so far. Keep up the great work!
Now, it is your turn. As we discussed, you will have to workout on your own if you want to make the team. In order to do this, you need to be very motivated. Believe me, it will be easy to find excuses not to go outside and work on your basketball homework. In order for you to be successful, you need to take control of your schedule to ensure that you will have enough time to complete your daily workout. Take my advice: get your homework and chores done first. Do your homework in all your free time at school even while you are waiting for the bus or carpool. If you have tests, start studying for them a couple of days in advance, instead of waiting until the night before. If you spread out and balance your school work load, you’ll be able to complete your basketball workouts without much trouble. But if you waste time at school or watch television or play video games everyday, you probably won’t have enough time to work on your basketball, and then it will be harder to make the team. The choice is yours: you can become a great Nintendo player, or a better basketball player. Personally, I’d rather be able to beat somebody on the basketball court than at Nintendo, but that’s just me talking.
In addition to this letter, you should have two documents that will serve as a guide for your workouts. One is called the "Drill Guide 1999-2000", and the other is called "Individual Workout Plan". Neither document is completely finished. We will send out updates for both of them later this week, or hand them out at practice on Saturday. They both have enough information for you to get started this week. In the Drill Guide, you will find explanations of every drill or exercise you will be asked to do. If you have questions about an exercise or drill, ask a coach at practice or call me at home. The Workout Plan tells you what to do for each day. Whatever day you start is "Day 1", the next day you workout is "Day 2", and so on. Hopefully, this will be five days of the week, skipping Saturday since we will be practicing and then taking one other day off, if you want. If you want to work without skipping a day, fine. Just make sure you are fresh and ready for your Saturday practice.
As I mentioned at practice, it is my hope that each of you takes these workouts seriously. Remember not to waste time during your workout. Push yourself and remember that faster is not always better, especially when you are starting out. Make sure you perfect your technique before worrying about how fast or how many things you can do. Just doing the work won’t be enough. You need to improve. Concentrate on getting better all of the time, and remember that it will take small steps at first. Be patient with yourself, but also be demanding and firm.
Remember that all of the coaches and myself want you to succeed at this. We can help you with explanations, but only you can do the work and improve.
We want you to succeed!
Good luck,
John
